Castries is a city rich in history and culture. From its early status as
a refuge for sailors particularly the English and French military, as
well as a major port for the exportation of charcoal, the city has grown
into ultra-modern centre for business and government. Tourism and retail
is now the major commercial activity in the city with an expanded port
capable of holding up to 5 large cruise ships simultaneously.
Visitors to the city have a variety of
interesting things to see and places to visit. Among the most popular
are Morne Fortune, Derek Walcott Square (formerly Columbus Square) and
the Castries Market.
